After two days of mackerel fishing, bright sunshine, and plenty of activity at the harbor, the Makrel Master 2026 was decided on Sunday. Team Size Matters had a strong second day of competition and was ultimately crowned the winner of this year’s Makrel Master.
A total of 53 boat teams participated in the competition, and already after Saturday’s fishing, it was clear that the battle for the top spots would be close. Team Lima finished the first day in the lead with 8,490 grams for their 10 mackerel, while Team Size Matters followed in second place, just 96 grams behind.
On Sunday, however, the standings were turned upside down.
Size Matters went from second place to victory
On the final day of the competition, Team Size Matters managed to significantly improve their overall score, finishing with 9,040 grams for the 10 mackerel that counted toward the competition. As a result, the team moved up from second place on Saturday to the very top of the podium.
Team Lima wasn’t quite able to build on their strong performance on the first day of competition, but they held on to an impressive podium finish. With a total weight of 8,504 grams, they finished in second place.
The battle for second and third place could hardly have been closer. Team Aiwi finished with 8,500 grams and thus had to watch as second place went to Team Lima by a margin of just four grams.
This really highlights just how close the competition was at this year’s Mackerel Master. In the end, the difference between second and third place could have come down to just a few grams on a single mackerel.
Anja took the win with a mackerel weighing 1,238 grams
In the individual competition as well, some impressive fish were caught.
The largest mackerel at Makrel Master 2026 was caught by Anja from Team Size Matters. Her mackerel weighed in at an impressive 1,238 grams, allowing her to add her individual victory to the team’s overall first-place finish.
The battle for the remaining spots was extremely close.
Rasmus from Team Ralle took second place with a mackerel weighing 1,005 grams, while Lars from Team Bundhug took third place with 1,002 grams.
So there were just three grams separating second and third place.
Lots of activity at the harbor
However, Makrel Master is about more than just the results out on the water. On both days of the competition, the harbor was bustling with activity, and the booths were busy with crowds of people in the harbor area.
The weather was also at its best, with bright sunshine both days, and everyone enjoyed themselves at the harbor while the 53 boat teams competed on the water.
There was also plenty to do for the youngest participants and visitors. The crab fishing was a huge success, and Saturday’s harbor scavenger hunt for the little ones exceeded all expectations with many participants.
There was also plenty of fishing right from the harbor, where fish such as gilthead seabream and whiting were landed. This provided fishing and activities for both the competing teams and the many visitors at the harbor.
After two successful days of competition, the Makrel Master 2026 thus came to a close with an exceptionally close finish, plenty of activity at the marina, and Team Size Matters at the top of the podium.
